And when the Jews were gone out
of the synagogue, the Gentiles
besought that these words might be
preached to them the next sabbath.

Welcome, welcome, day of rest,
To the world in kindness given;
Seventh of days the Sabbath best,
As the beaming light from heaven.

Day of calm and sweet repose,
Gently now thy moments run;
Balm to soothe our cares and woes,
Till our labour here is done.

Holy day that we most prize,
Day of solemn praise and prayer,
Day to make the simple wise,
O, how great thy blessings are!
